Autonomous vessels are among the maritime industry’s key technologies of the future. Progress towards this goal is being made incrementally, ranging from partially autonomous support functions to fully self-navigating ships. To achieve this, the sector is deploying sensors, artificial intelligence (AI), automation systems and advanced communication technologies that enable independent navigation, decision-making and safe vessel operation.
Advanced Maritime Technology is a leading international trade fair dedicated entirely to this emerging field. Held annually each June at the prestigious RAI Amsterdam — one of Europe’s largest and most modern exhibition and conference venues, centrally located and easily accessible by both public transport and car — the event is organised by UKi Media & Events, an internationally recognised specialist in technology-focused trade exhibitions. The company also organises the Electric & Hybrid Marine Expo Europe, which takes place alongside Advanced Maritime Technology and provides a complementary thematic extension to the exhibition.

Cybersecurity, regulatory frameworks, liability issues and international legislation relating to autonomous shipping also feature prominently.
Sustainability is another major focus area. Autonomous systems are expected not only to reduce operating costs and improve safety, but also to lower emissions — for example through energy-efficient route optimisation, the integration of electric or hydrogen-based propulsion systems, and more efficient overall vessel operations.
